| Name: | Dist |
|---|
Character: Dist the Rose (Saphir Wyon Neis)
Series/Fandom: Tales of the Abyss
Original or Alternate: Original
Age: 35
Gender: Male [… no, really.]
Species: Human
Sexuality: Jadesexual. No, I’m not kidding. … okay, gay.
Appearance: Dist will tell you that he’s the most ultra gorgeous person in all of Auldrant. He’ll tell you all about his soft skin, his slender and appealing body, his beautiful white hair that he keeps so tidy and full, and of course, his stunning face complete with stylish glasses that rightly frame elegant violet eyes that match the color of his chic lip gloss. From his description, anyone would think he was a good-looking person and the type you’d want to be around.
But we know better, don’t we?
Sure, Dist has short white hair, glasses, violet eyes and lip gloss, and damn if he isn’t skinny, but he’s not exactly what one could call ‘all that and a bag of chips.’ Dist talks big, but is actually quite awkward looking and unattractive. There might be some sort of an appeal to him, but he’s certainly not as lovely as he says he is.
Personality: If there wasn’t already an indication from what’s written under appearance, Dist is an effeminate narcissist. He boasts about his looks and intelligence relentlessly, even if he’s proven wrong or turned down. He’s very loud and very obnoxious, and has little to no shame. Almost all of his master plans get messed up somehow or just plain fail, and he’s a terrible liar. He’s pretty pathetic, as most of the cast of the game will tell you. He’s the perfect example of what every single school bully would love to go after.
Dist is, unfortunately, also very much obsessed with his childhood friend, Jade Balfour – now known as Jade Curtiss – and everything he does is to get attention from Jade. He wants nothing more than to be recognized as Jade’s best friend again, and is convinced that the only way to do that is to continue the forbidden research the two started ages ago. Of course, Jade’s tried to separate himself from this, so Dist always ends up coming up short.
Oh well! He’s much too hard to ignore, what with his gorge—
Hey, why did you stop reading?! D8<
Abilities/Weapons: Dist doesn’t have very many abilities so far as magic goes (or at least, we aren’t shown anything in the game), but he does have a knack for science and engineering, and makes anything from small messenger robots to gigantic killing machines that do all of the fighting for him.
Weaknesses: One could say that Jade is his weakness. As stated before, everything he does is for Jade, and if anything threatened their already broken friendship, he’d crumble. Not to mention, Jade’s manipulated him in the past and with Dist still so eager to please him, the present is no different.
Also, though this is more simple, he can’t fight for crap. 8);
History:
Saphir was not a very popular kid. He was ugly, awkward, and just plain weird, and it wasn’t until Jade came along did he have any friends at all. He thought their friendship was genuine and would do anything at all to keep it that way. One might say he became Jade’s slave, doing anything and everything he said out of fear that Jade would cut off the friendship and leave Saphir alone in the dust.
So during the entirety of his childhood, he was becoming very dependent on Jade, as if his existence had no meaning besides whatever value Jade put within him. There was another person, however, who helped make Saphir into a person. This was Professor Gelda Nebilim, whom taught both of the boys and acted as a close mentor to the both of them. This all quite literally went up in flames when Jade, on accident, managed to burn the house of the professor as well as the woman herself.
It was Saphir’s time to shine, then, when Jade enlisted his help in reviving their beloved teacher after the first attempted revival had failed. The two worked together endlessly, regardless of the fact that such research and actions were forbidden, and all the while, Jade kept Saphir wrapped around his finger.
That all changed when Jade ‘betrayed’ him. Jade had left Keterburg, his and Saphir’s home, to get a better education so that he could learn more and more about the process of reviving and about making replicas. However, very suddenly he decided to discontinue his research and cut all ties with Saphir and the deceased professor, leaving the former not only seeping with rage, but at a loss for what to do.
At some point, he and his research were found by Van Grants, a man who had use for Saphir’s intelligence and own ambition for furthering his knowledge and practicing forbidden sciences. During this time, Saphir became known as Dist the Reaper (though he prefers Dist the Rose, himself), one of the Six-God-Generals under Van’s command.
Though he had no true intention of ever going along with anything Van told him to do. All of the research, all of the actions and experiments were so he could find a way to revive the professor even after Jade had given up. If Saphir could manage it, he knew Jade would be his friend again.
Yes, he knew.
